Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
In a previous post, I presented a graphic of the countries that sent the highest amount of US dollar remittances around the world in 2022. The United States has been found to be at the top of these countries. In another post, the top receivers of remittances were presented, and India was found at the top of that list in 2023. That post assumed that the top recipients are those countries that contribute the most to the flow of immigration to the United States. Implicitly, it was assumed that the top receivers of remittances from around the world, especially India, Mexico, and China, could be the top receivers of remittances specifically from the United States. Is that true? In the current blog post, I try to verify this assumption, although the most recent bilatera remittance data I could find is for 2021.
Definition: Bilateral remittance data refers to information about the transfer of funds between two countries. This post considers bilateral remittances between the United States and other countries that receive its remittances.
The graphic in the current post shows that Mexico and India are the top two countries that receive the highest value of remittances from the United States. China appears to be in fifth position. Guatemala and the Philippines, the countries that follow Mexico and India, have also been found among the top 10 global receivers of remittances (previous post). Among the top 10 recipients of remittances from the United States are several countries with the highest values of remittances received worldwide.
Although India receives the highest US dollar amount of remittances from the world, it is in second position after Mexico, when considering remittances specifically from the United States. The gap between these two countries indicates that, when remittances from around the globe are taken into account, India may have additional significant remittance sources that allow it to rank higher than Mexico.
