Haiti's Path to Prosperity: Key Actions

Haiti is experiencing a profound socioeconomic and political crisis. As the international community seeks solutions to the political crisis, this economy faces negative GDP growth and high inflation. In light of these challenges, what steps can be taken to reverse the current economic downturn? This week, I attended an online presentation of the results of the Trase Chimen project, which offers insights and recommendations for fostering prosperity in Haiti.

Definition: Trase Nouvo Chimen, with a short name Trase Chimen, is a project implemented by Université Quisqueya, where propositions are collected from people of the municipal sections of Haiti, about  four axes grouping the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG): national production; essential services; governance; public infrastructure, energy and telecommunications.

While considering the project's dashboard related to national production, it provides information about actions proposed by the municipal sections for Haiti's prosperity. The result of the project reveals that building roads is the most important action proposed by the municipal sections. Although this action is consistent with economic theory, which holds that governments typically use infrastructure investments to stimulate their economies, it's possible that Haiti's lack of suitable roads has something to do with it. In addition, the second proposed action, addressing electricity shortages, highlights another critical infrastructure challenge faced by the Haitian population.

Examining the project dashboard, the complexity of the undertaken tasks is apparent. The innovation of the Haitian civil society collecting data to identify proposals for the prosperity of Haiti is noteworthy. Congratulations to the dedicated team behind this project!

There is room for further civil society initiatives that use innovative approaches to suggest solutions to the problems Haiti is experiencing.
