By Raulin Cadet | Published March 5, 2024 | Updated March 5, 2024 | Topics: Haiti, Income, Spain, Gold, Silver

On March 1st, 2024, the price of silver is 22.72 USD/Oz, while the price of gold is 22049.8 USD/Oz. This blog post examines the estimated values of gold and silver resources in Haiti using data on estimated mineral deposits from the Bureau of Minerals and Energy in Haiti.

Definition: Both gold and silver are precious metals, that have been used as currency and store of value for thousands of years, and continue to be important assets. According to information released by the Bureau of Minerals and Energy,until today, people have been looking for and finding gold in Haiti's northern alluvial deposits. The Spanish, during the colonial era, extracted gold in Haiti.

The graphic of this article shows that the current value of gold deposits exceeds a total of 1.1 billion USD. To date, gold deposits is found among three sites in the North of Haiti. Grand Bois, located between Limbé and Camp-Coq, is the site of the most significant gold deposit. The mineral deposits of Grand Bois as well as the one of Morne Bossa contains silver also, as revealed in the graphic. Although there are more silver than gold on these mineral deposits, the value of gold is higher since its price is very high.

In addition to gold and silver, other mineral resources are identified in Haiti. This is a rich country, but with low income level.

 I'm happy to conclude with these classic quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien, which capture the essence of resilience and optimism.

All that is gold does not glitter

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king."
